For most homes, MERV 8 to 13 is the practical range. Higher ratings capture finer particles but restrict airflow, and a filter your system cannot pull air through will cause more problems than the dust it catches. We can tell you what your specific furnace handles comfortably.

Every few years for most homes. It is worth doing sooner after a renovation, if you have pets and visible dust buildup at the registers, or if the house was recently occupied by smokers. It is not an annual necessity for most households, and we will tell you if you do not need it.

It can help meaningfully with dust, pollen, pet dander, and mould spores, since those are particulates a good filter captures. It does not address gases or odours. Pairing better filtration with correct humidity usually does more than either alone.
